The Day of Atonement is on Sunday the 27th this year starting the night before. One way to observe this is day is to start a fast at sundown the night before. This day was the only day the high priest would enter the holy of holies to interceed for all of Israel. Much like Christ our high preist interceeds for us (Hebrews 4:14-16).
